SUMMER 2008

FSC Reassessment - March 2007
NZFM had its first reassessment of operations for FSC Certification in March 2008. Reassessments occur every five years and a new FSC certificate is issued if the reassessment is successful. The NZFM reassessment was very successful. There were two minor Corrective Action Requests (CAR’s) raised during the visit and a number of observations were made by the auditors.

The results from this reassessment and the issue of NZFM’s second FSC Certificate reiterate and give NZFM confidence that the forests are being managed in an environmentally, economically and socially responsible way.

Caging of Dactylanthus taylorii plants
NZFM has now completed caging a number of individual Dactylanthus taylorii plants and building a predator exclusion fence around an area containing a number of plants. This project is one that is funded by the Biodiversity Condition Fund. The fund is managed by the Department of Conservation to encourage the conservation of biodiversity on private lands.

A fencing contractor erected the predator exclusion fence and summer students banded trees around the fence and cleaned up the site to complete the project in late 2007.

Approved Log Maker Presentations
When NZFM ceased using the Timbertech Calipers in 2007 it became apparent that logmakers manual log making skills required improvement. NZFM introduced a requirement that all harvesting crews were to have a NZFM Approved Logmaker.

To become a NZFM Approved Logmaker, workers had to hold the appropriate unit standards, have a good understanding of NZFM log grades, and maintain a consistent standard in log making audits (95% value recovery).

Certificates were presented to approved log makers at the NZFM office in November.

Approved logmakers continue to take part in ongoing training, including NZFM log making workshops. This allows consistent standards of logmaking to be maintained throughout the forests that NZFM manage. There is also ongoing opportunities for new logmakers to be trained.
