Notice of forest closures due to Cyclone Vaianu
Cyclone Vaianu is fast approaching New Zealand and widespread, hazardous weather conditions are predicted across the motu.
In light of the latest forecast, including the likelihood of severe winds and heavy rainfall, all NZFM managed forests will be closed to all access from 6pm Saturday 11th April.
The forests will remain closed until the cyclone has passed and a full assessment has been completed to confirm that the they are safe to reopen.
In the unlikely event that individuals become stranded within the forest due to road blockages (e.g. windthrow or slips), NZFM may not be in a position to provide assistance or extraction until it is safe to do so. This is unlikely to be before Monday morning, once the worst of the weather has passed.
If anyone is unable to safely exit the forest, they should:
Contact the NZFM duty officer on 07 386 8757, providing their name, contact number, and current location
Remain in a safe, open area, well clear of any potential hazards such as falling trees or waterways
Maintain regular contact with the NZFM duty officer
NZFM will provide assistance as soon as it is safe to do so.
We urge all forest users to proceed safely and ensure you are clear of the forests by 6pm Saturday.
